THE STUDY: Our research paper "Acute Effects of a Single-dose Nutritional Product on Stress Response and Task Completion in Horses" is being published in the Journal of Equine Veterinary Science, and describes the benefit of our product in reducing stress response.
The objective of the study was to compare the effects of acepromazine and our product Calm & Collected in horses participating in tasks typical of normal equine management.
Six horses were fitted with a heart-rate monitor after receiving a single dose of acepromazine, Calm & Collected, or a placebo paste exactly 30 minutes prior to commencement of tasks. Tasks included loading onto an equine scale, loading onto a 2-horse trailer, unaccompanied transport in a 2-horse trailer, blood sampling, and 10 minutes in a stall with an unfamiliar object.
Stress response was determined by measuring peak and average heart rates during each task, how long it took to complete each task, and blood levels of a stress hormone 'cortisol.'
Horses receiving the control paste had increased peak and average heart rates for each task, and their blood levels of cortisol were increased at the end of the battery of tests.
The average heart rate of the earliest task (30 minutes following administration of supplements) was significantly reduced by provision of either acepromazine or Calm & Collected, and there was no significant difference between these two groups. It is concluded that oral acepromazine and Calm & Collected were equally effective at reducing stress associated with typical equine tasks. |
